Hi Sarah thanks for posting this . For me sitting with rural women and listening to them is almost like in a mini MBA class :) some times back I was in rural Gujrat meeting the directors of embroidery artisan women's federation . One of my team member has asked them as rural artisan women , doing manual work how they compete with new trends in the market/and fashion industry . This was the answer from a artisan woman in the director board !

" Indian currency will be just a piece of paper(not a note !) if there is no Gandhi Ji's pic printed in it . Similarly our hand made work provides a unique valeu /identity/touch to a piece of cloth which can't be given by a machine . And we know now a days fashion industry is changing every week and what are the emerging interests /colour combinations of customers .So we have no other competiters .we are unique :)

I was just Stunting the way how she articulates this market behaviors :) believe me she is an illiterate village woman

Much inspired from your blog and my learning continues as an ex Ox staff from Sri Lanka. I always appreciate and value the exposure I have received from my Oxfam days.
Now I work for UNHCR Sri Lanka mission as a National Officer. No doubt I was able to drive the wheel easily with all the confidence building and training I got as a female manager during Ox days. I was put in deep end but with enough training and guidance. Salute to Oxfam GB and to managers like you for developing young females in leadership. Believe me… they become outstanding in the public forums. I miss my Oxfam trainings though would like to write these words for you.

This is good down to earth advice Sarah. I think sometimes people are looking for something new or 'scientific' and it's just not there or not needed.

Completely agree re doing the difficult thing before the morning coffee break and I find that as a leader having to approach a difficult situation we need to be careful not to build it up into something it's not or bigger than it really is!
